Donegal Oil

HOME HEATING

44 Year old Sheral Hetherington, a married stay at home housewife with three children has always been interested in keeping fit. She started running about 4 years ago as a way of getting some “me” time. At the beginning and as she was a newbie to the world of fitness, she had her fair share of injuries which was very frustrating for her.

In 2015 with a lot of help from Adam Speer, Speer Performance she completed several 10 Milers and Half Marathons and then unfortunately at the beginning of 2016 she got injured AGAIN!

She was ready to throw in the towel when Adam Speer recommended trying the bike as a way of keeping up her fitness levels and give her a break from running. Sheral hadn’t been on the bike since she was a very young child and wasn’t overly thrilled at the idea but gave it a go anyway!

Earlier this year, her husband saw the Team Donegal Oil post on Facebook looking for a team of novices to take part in the Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race 555Km. When he told her she thought it sounded like a good idea to join part of a team & it would be a real challenge with people of the same fitness level so I decided to put my name forward.

Now here she is, The Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra  2017 is just weeks away and she is starting as a complete cycling novice. The training with Team Donegal to date has been fantastic and with so much support & encouragement from Arthur McMahon, Team Donegal Oil, and her team mates, she is delighted but slightly nervous to now be part of Team Donegal Oil taking on the challenge of Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race 555Km.

But Sheral is determined to #haveago.

Marvin McEvilly, from Newtoncunningham was browsing Facebook one night towards the end of 2016, & saw a post from Team Donegal Oil encouraging people who were not active or motivated to to come join them in and #haveago as part of a cycling team they were trying to put together for the 2017 Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra.

Marvin went along to an information evening & he is now one of an 8 person team currently in training & will take part in the Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race later this month. He is delighted with his progress & team training so far!

Commenting on why he decided to contact Team Donegal Oil Marvin said, “I started what I thought was going to be an easy thing to do, cycling, back in August last year on a heavy Hybrid bike. I got only a short distance and I knew myself that my fitness levels were so poor.”

“Like everyone, you get out one day for a walk or a cycle & you think that your fit, but we all know thats not the case. The next day I went out to play with my youngest son, he ran off and I chased after him and I was just completely out of breath in no time.”

“This was the turning point for me, when I realised just how unfit I had become when I couldn’t even catch up with my 5 year old son, it scared the life out of me. It was a bigger shock when I stepped on the weighing scales and discovered I weighed not far off 16st. I knew then that I had to do something, and something more than one short outing on my bike!”

“My partner came across a 2nd hand road bike and I thought as I had cycled when I was aged 10-12, ah sure, I’d give it a go. I started out cycling with a few lads from around Newtowncunningham. And I really enjoyed it, but wasn’t pushing myself to any extreme limits. Some time later I signed myself up for The Giants Causeway Coast Sportive, did some training and completed 35miles in just under 3hrs. I was delighted with my own gradual progress.”

“After that I didn’t know where to go from there, but I knew I had to do something as my fitness levels were increasing & I was just feeling so much better in myself & had gained confidence on the bike. Shortly after The Giants Causeway Coast Sportive these words and hashtag “#haveago” caught my eye on Facebook.”

“I got in touch with Arthur McMahon from Team Donegal Oil and was invited to a meeting where I met Arthur. His attitude, inspiration, encouragement and his obvious love of sport was so infectious. I never thought back in August last year, I’d be looking forward to competing in a 555km cycling challenge with a Team that are all exactly in the same boat as me, cycling novices, for the 2017 Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race and I am so looking forward to it.”

“But I really would like to thank my partner who encouraged me to do this. None of this would have been possible without the support from my her and my three boys. I am happy to say that I am now I am just under 12st in weight because of the training and I can catch up with my 5 year old son. I want to thank Arthur McMahon for this wonderful opportunity and look forward to teaming up with Team Donegal Oil for our team challenge in a few weeks.”

“Team Donegal Oil was set up to encourage people who are sitting on the couch and who would love the opportunity of a support team to help them to just simply #haveago at anything that will increase their fitness levels, and get them off the couch. We all know that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind and we all need support and encouragement sometimes. If that’s what Team Donegal Oil can provide, then we are on the right track to encouraging more people to join us and we are delighted by the response from right across the county, I would like to wish this determined 8 person team the very best of luck, I know they are determined. They will #haveago & they will do this, commented Arthur McMahon.

Donegal native Shaun Stewart & Galway native Lonan O’Farrell took on a challenge that not many even consider yet undertake to do, they climbed 26 of Ireland’s Highest Peaks, covering 32 counties in Ireland over 3 days beating the fastest known time of 87 hours 50 minutes by an amazing 27 hours and 15 mins.

On Thursday morning last Shaun Stewart & Lonan O’Farrell started their challenge at Mweelrea Mountain in Co. Mayo, they travelled the length & breadth of Ireland, covering every single county, climbed 26 of Ireland’s Highest Peaks, finishing last Saturday evening at the peak of Errigal Mountain in Co. Donegal when their time was recorded at an astonishing 60 hours 35 minutes.

It takes mental & physical ability for any athlete to take on an endurance challenge like this one, but these guys, proved that they were fit for the job. They knew that it would be challenging but they were determined to complete it and they did. Shaun & Lonan both took part in the 2017 Race adventure challenge last month & finished 2nd & 4th respectively.

They met over 4 years ago as competitors but quickly became great friends with the same passion and drive and last year they raced in the same team at the Itera Expedition Race another tough endurance challenge. Before the Race 2017, they knew they would like to undertake to do something else but together as a team and for charity. A challenge to beat the fastest known time by climbing all of Ireland’s 26 Peaks over 32 counties was probably the biggest challenge they could imagine facing & doing so this is what they decided to do, gathered an amazing team & they did it!

Commenting on the challenge Shaun Stewart said “ We knew that taking on this 32 counties – 26 peaks challenge was going to be a really tough test both physically and mentally for us both. Apart from the climbing and running, the major challenges we did face were lack of sleep and recovery time. Over the 60hrs 35mins from start to finish, both Lonan & myself had less than 4 hrs sleep. In order to set a really fast time it was necessary to go non stop, so eating and sleeping had to be on the go and in between climbs.”

Shaun & Lonan undertook to do this challenge not only to aim to beat the fastest known time but to raise money for 2 worthy charities. Our ladies Hospital for Sick Children & Play Therapy Centre, Lakeview School, in Co. Galway, a therapy centre where children in need of emotional or physcholgical help can get the support and therapy they require. The money raised to date for both charities has exceeded their expectations & they are overwhelmed by the generosity and support they have received from all over Ireland and across the world.

Commenting further Shaun said, “The weather was favourable over the 3 days and that meant that navigation was a little easier with clearer skies. We cannot believe how many of our adventure racing friends from all across the country turned up at different mountains to help pace and guide us. The support & generosity everywhere we went was unreal and to them we are so grateful.”

“Without a strong, practical & knowledgeable team behind a challenge like this, what we achieved & the record we broke could not have happened. The logistics and planning for this challenge was vitally important. We set out a very ambitious schedule and we managed to hit most targets. Our sponsors, our team & our crew made it possible to achieve our record time, delivering us safely to the start point of each climb, preparing food and keeping us motivated at every stage of every day and night, meant that all we had to do was climb the peaks and concentrate on the challenge.”

“We realise now that the challenge would not have run as smooth without the support of our organiser and main sponsor Donegal Oil Company’s, Arthur McMahon. Arthur’s input to the organising & logistics was invaluable. A true professional with a passion for what we were doing and with help from Rory Kennedy, they mapped out the fastest route for this challenge which took alot of planing time beforehand. Arthur & Shaun Doherty travelled with us for the first half of the challenge and then they were replaced by Denis Ferry & Leslie O’Donnell from Donegal Ice Road Trekkers who made sure we drove the planned & quickest route to each peak. We are so grateful to them all, they certainly looked after us & kept us on our toes! “says Shaun.

Lonan O’Farrell commented, “Manor Motors Opel Garage gave us an Opel Vivaro for the challenge, a fantastic addition to the team & it made our journey much more comfortable and ensured we had the space and a home to drive us to exactly where we needed to go. Alot of the time off road. We have to give a huge thank you to Colm Dillon. I’d like to say that the event was one that took a full on team effort. I had some pretty massive lows during the second day with major travel sickness and sleep deprivation. However, with help from the team and a big push I came through it and we enjoyed some really high points along the rest of the way. It is hard to explain my feelings when we were close to the finish but fantastic pride in the entire team, utter exhaustion and amazement at what we can do when we push ourselves, are a few that come to mind!”

Arthur McMahon from Donegal Oil Company & main sponsor for the event said “ Anytime you strap on a number and race head to head with others there is an amount of comfort in knowing where your opposition is. You can pace yourself and see how things pan out. With this challenge, there was no opposition so keeping the whole team focused on their performance could have been difficult. As it turned out the whole team functioned brilliantly. Shaun and Lonan are magnificent athletes, completely hard core. They maintained their determination, rested when possible, ate well when possible and, above all, kept their spirits up. The support crew, without whom this would not have happened, did an outstanding job. From setting off from Letterkenny on Wednesday evening, getting to the start line on Thursday morning, navigating to the 26 climbs over the 1800km of the trip and keeping Shaun and Lonan right, these guys were faultless. I’ve done a few things like this over the last few years and the thing that always impresses me most is how selfless the people who came out to assist us are. We had help from some of the best trail runners in the country, they came out at 2 in the morning, helped us navigate, showed us how to drive on the door handles in Molls Gap and generally cheered us on. To everyone who donated to our charities, thank you. To everyone who came out to wish us well on the journey or came together at Mount Errigal on Saturday night, thank you.”

Denis Ferry from Donegal Ice Road Trekkers commented, “We had planned a while ago that at 15.24 on the Friday Leslie O’ Donnell and I would take over from Arthur and Shaun at peak number 11, Kippure, Co. Dublin. We left Letterkenny at 11.30am and the hand over was complete at 15.23pm. Les and I thought how amazing the boys had done by sticking to the schedule with such accuracy. Arthur and Shaun Doherty had done a brillant job and they handed over the maps, gps units, a tidy van and most importantly two athletes who were in top form despite having been already 30 hours on the road. We knew that Arthur and Shaun Doherty did much more than drive and navigate, they encouraged Shaun and Lonan when no one else was there and kept spirits and their motivation flowing.”

“When we arrived at our first peak and Shaun and Lonan took off running the importance of us doing what we were there to do became much more real, after the previous crew setting the bar. The preparation pre event was kicking in with our van packed correctly so that everything was to hand and everyone had their place and equally important had their space. The mood in the van changed just like the mountains depending on the previous or next peak. There were stories told when spirits were high and silence when things were not going how we expected it to. But at all times one thing never changed and that was the common goal of succeeding. The team was tested early on Saturday morning because of a number of factors bumpy road, fatigue, sickness from Sligo through Fermanagh and Monaghan, but a 30 minute rest, a swift ham sandwich and a big portion of ‘you can do it’, the Guillion Peak, in County Armagh was summited. But more importantly moral was back where we needed it. Shaun’s Dad Patsy Stewart and his little 2 year old niece Cara’s Daddy, Ronan Murphy met us at this point and this along with our second wind, the rest of the peaks brought us closer to the finish. The Red Opel Vivaro Van bounced towards Errigal mountain with a great sense of satisfaction and the last climb was started at 20.05. Despite the boys being on the go 60 hours and 5 mins they managed to run to the top of Errigal in an astounding 30 mins and for the last time we heard ‘We’re at the top’ over our two way radios.”

“The high point for us was seeing the boys faces in the rear view mirror as we approached Errigal Mountain, the low point was finishing, because now it’s all over but our best point was everyone doing what they had to do and did so showing admiration and respect for everyone on the team.” concluded Denis.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, Arthur McMahon, Donegal Oil Company, Colm Dillon, Manor Motors Opel our crew Denis Ferry, Paul Doherty & Leslie O’Donnell from Donegal Ice Road Trekkers, Rory Kennedy, Shaun Doherty, our families, our friends, everyone who donated to our charities, everyone who came & helped & gave us support along the way, the media for great coverage, Shane Young from Killary Adventure who supplied us with a boat to cross the Killary fjord, in Connemara, which added some excitement to the challenge and helped slice off a large chunk of travel time, Paul Doherty Photographer who climbed to the top of Errigal Mountain to capture amazingly stunning shots of our final challenge & finish, Grace Ann McGarvey for her PR, Media & Social Media coverage, Crumlin Children’s Hospital for helping us set up the online charity page, Play Therapy Centre, Lakeview School in Galway, everyone who made it to the final peak and celebrated our finish at Errigal Mountain, Co. Donegal on Saturday evening and just everyone who helped make this possible, gave us advice & huge support.”

This Thursday April 20th, Shaun Stewart from Co. Donegal & Lonan O’Farrell from Galway will climb Ireland’s 26 High Peaks aiming to beat the fastest known time of 87 Hours & 50 mins.

They will start their challenge on Mweelrea Mountain in Co. Mayo, work their way around Ireland from the west and finish at Mount Errigal in Co. Donegal on Saturday 22nd.

“The conditions will be challenging” says Shaun, who comes from Ards in Creeslough, “but we believe that we can do it in record time. We have a fantastic team on board to help with sponsorship, organising & support crew. Arthur McMahon from Team Donegal Oil along with Rory Kennedy have been instrumental to working out the logistics, navigation and getting everything we need for the challenge prepared in advance.

“Donegal Road Trekkers Denis Ferry, Leslie O’Donnell and Paul Doherty will crew with us and they are no strangers to taking on challenges like this and we are delighted to have their experience on board. We also are delighted that Colm Dillon from Manor Motors Opel will provide us with a Opel Vivaro which will house everything we need for the journey. Our aim is to complete the challenge in approx 72 hours, and we are hopeful that we can do it”.

A GPS tracker has been set up so the duration of the challenge will be shared on social media so everyone can track their performance online in realtime.

As Mount Errigal will be their last mountain to climb & they hope that there will be a huge show of support at the picturesque Donegal Gaeltacht in Co. Donegal when they will reach the top of Mount Errigal to complete the challenge & record their time.

Commenting on the challenge sponsor & supporting crew Arthur McMahon commented “Myself & Rory Kennedy are delighted to be able to sponsor & crew for Shaun & Lonan and are delighted that they will undertake this challenge under the Team Donegal Oil umbrella. We have worked out a route together as a team along with the three lads & Denis Ferry, Lesie O’Donnell & Paul Doherty from the Donegal Road Trekkers, that we feel will work for their challenge & do it in the record time the lads have set.

We will be travelling through all of Ireland & Northern Ireland’s 32 counties & already have received huge support from people all over Ireland who have offered their support at each peak along the way. We would like as many people as possible to join us at Mount Errigal on Saturday 22nd when the lads will climb Mount Errigal and end their challenge at the top”.

Lonan & Shaun have decided that they would also like to raise some money for charity and Lonan has chosen a local Galway charity, The Play Therapy Galway, Lakeview School, Galway. Shaun has chosen Crumlin Children’s Hospital as his charity. Donations are pouring in already for both charities.

Shaun chose Crumlin Children’s Hospital as his little niece Cara was born with a condition called Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD). This is a rare birth defect that affects the pelvis, particularly the hip bone, and the femur. The disorder may affect one side or both, with the hip being deformed and the leg shortened. At birth Cara’s right leg was approximately 1.5cm shorter than her left leg. As she continues to grow so does the discrepancy between her leg lengths. Currently her limb difference is 7cm and this will continue to increase. Cara wears a shoe that has a raise of 7 cm and she manages great with these. The good news is we hope that Cara will be able to have lengthening surgeries. It is uncertain yet as to how many surgeries Cara will need as each case of PFFD is individualised and there is no set plan of treatment that suits every patient. Lengthening surgery is a slow and painful process and the Limb Reconstruction Unit in Our Ladies Children’s Hospital, Crumlin have the expertise and skills necessary to carry out these procedures. Cara walked at 13 months and loves running and climbing like every other two year old.

Cara and her family will be there to cheer on Shaun, Lonan and the crew as they take on Errigal the highest peak in Donegal to complete their challenge.

If you would like to support or donate to their charities, you can find all the details on the challenge, updates & their live progress from 20th – 22nd April by following their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/highpeaksfktchallenge.

Donegal & Galway Duo to climb Ireland’s 26 High Peaks for charity!

Shaun Stewart & Lonan O’Farrell are a two man team who will climb Ireland’s 26 High Peaks aiming to beat the fastest known time of 87 Hours & 50 mins on April 20th when they start the challenge at Mweelrea in Co. Mayo!

These two lads are no strangers to challenges like this, they both took part in the 2017 Race last month & finished 2nd & 4th respectively. Mount Errigal will be their last mountain to climb & they hope that there will be a huge show of support in Donegal when they reach the top of Mount Errigal to complete the challenge & record their time.

Commenting on the challenge sponsor & supporting crew Arthur McMahon commented “Myself & Rory are delighted to be able to sponsor & crew for Shaun & Lonan and are delighted that they will undertake this challenge under the Team Donegal Oil umbrella. Cara will be there to cheer on Shaun, Lonan and the crew as they take on Errigal the highest peak in Donegal as the final peak to climb on their challenge.  “We would really appreciate if you would support this great cause because we all know someone who has & will benefit from Crumlin Children’s Hospital.” says Shaun.

Shaun Stewart, Rory Kennedy, Denis Ferry, Leslie O’Donnell & Arthur McMahon

Monday evening past saw a great gathering of people from all over the county & sporting backgrounds attend the launch of “Team Donegal Oil” at the offices of Donegal Oil Company, Letterkenny.

Team Donegal Oil was set up by Arthur McMahon, MD of Donegal Oil Company in the hope that the members who join will take part in outdoor activities & community activities throughout the county and that they in turn would encourage their friends & family to get out, get active & just “Have a Go” at something whether it’s a walk, 5k, cycling, mountain climbing, swimming, adventure races whatever it takes to get you out & active.

As part of a 10 year Corporate Social Responsibility plan for Donegal Oil Company who employ almost 100 people in the county, Team Donegal Oil will continue to act as a platform to promote other activities that take place in the county every year and encourage people to take part in these activities as a team as well as hosting their own events later this year, starting off in 4 locations, one in Milford, one in Letterkenny, one in Killybegs & one in Falcarragh.

Arthur himself has been no stranger to sports including rugby for many years but when he stopped playing rugby he felt himself finding it hard to find an exercise that he could enjoy & just get out there. Team Donegal Oil sees the value in encouraging & helping people to just get out there off their sofa, get the blood pumping a little bit & knowing from his participation in exercise it helps you both physically & mentally & gives you a feel good factor about yourself.

Team Donegal Oil have set up a free membership registration online at www.donegaloil.ie/teamdonegaloil. When you register you will automatically get free entry to all Team Donegal Events and a bag of goodies including a branded Water Bottle and a Snood.

The other side of their corporate social responsibility plan is to partner with local charities in the hope that Team Donegal Oil will help them promote awareness and generate funds for their charities. If you are a Charity in County Donegal you can register online at http://www.donegaloil.ie/teamdonegaloil/register-your-charity.

In the past few years, Arthur and his Team Donegal Oil have taken part in events such as The Mulroy Bay Adventure Race, The Race Around Ireland, The Donegal Atlantic Ultra Race, WAAR, The Race and many more raising over 10,000 Euro for the Donegal based Autism Family Support Group.

Just before Christmas, Team Donegal Oil put out a call to anyone who would like to join them for the 2017 Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race, a 555km cycle relay race, which takes place in June 2017 and they were so overwhelmed with the response from men & women of every age & from every part of the county who wanted to join & take part in the training, crewing for the event & taking part, as part of “Team Donegal Oil”.

This is a fantastic initiative one of the first that County Donegal has seen from a company who takes their Corporate Social Responsibility seriously and already they have proved that “Team Donegal Oil” will be a huge success and already has hundreds of members registered.

To find out more visit their Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/TeamDonegalOil/ or visit http://www.donegaloil.ie and click on the “Team Donegal Oil” button at the top of the website.

And as their motto states “Have a Go”. Make 2017 the year you join Team Donegal Oil, get fit, get mentally active & meet new friends.

Official Launch of Team Donegal Oil Monday 16th January 2017 – 5pm at the Offices of Donegal Oil Company, Port Rd., Letterkenny – Everyone Invited!

Team Donegal Oil was set up by Arthur McMahon, MD Donegal OIl Company as part of their 10 year Corporate Social Responsility plans to encourage everyone to “have a go” at getting everyone outside to participate in sport, whether it’s walking, cycling, running, kayaking, mountain climbing or more.

To get the body moving and to participate in some of the fantastic events we have here in Donegal is great for your physical and mental health and you don’t have to be an elite athlete to enjoy it.

We hope that by encouraging people now at the start of 2017 to join Team Donegal Oil, we will provide platforms for people to get fit & meet new friends which will result in better physical & mental abilities in both personal & work life.

We also encourage local charities to register with Team Donegal Oil and our dedicated events held through the coming year will help raise awareness & funds for any charity that would like to join.

So Here’s to a happier, healthier & fitter you in 2017 & if you would like to find out more, come along to our official launch at the Offices of Donegal Oil Company, Port Rd., Letterkenny at 5pm on Monday 16th January 2017.
